March Madness and April Showers 2013

It never ceases to amaze me that the donations come when we need them most.  All Saints Catholic School thought of us during this Season of Lent that will provide many with a Kitchen Kit.  Dish cloths, dish towels, cooking utensils, measuring cups and spoons, a saute pan and more.  It has been a busy time but we are thankful and so are those we serve.  This past weekend we were able to give all those in need a blanket  in our still chilly city.

April is back to prime moving season and the return of the Yard Sales.  This year we would like to have 2 Art in the Park Days so if you have any framed art collecting dust, our friends see it as the finishing touch in making their house a home.

Our Yarn Club has a new project - we are now offering pot holders in our New Home kits and the Club is up to the challenge.  I will be posting the crochet pattern for any one else to join in.  Its a great quick project that travels easy wherever you go and keeps those hands busy doing great work.

The cost for one day of moving is averaging $150.00 in truck rental and gas.

We pick up and deliver at no charge and most are done Friday to be delivered Saturday morning between 8:00 and 9:30 am.

Clean Out your linen closet , kitchen cabinets and basements- Loose the Clutter. You will feel better when you donate the excess to those in need.

February 2013

We would like to thank the Best Western Dearborn for the donation of  their 27" TV's.  They have converted to flat screens and this  provides us with enough TV's for 2 years - one item off the list.

We have also been blessed with sponsors for Pillows, Can Openers and our newest addition - single electric burners.  If you live in one of the many motels converted to apartments you will not see a stove or microwave so you cannot cook for yourself which is great way to live on a budget.  Now they can heat up soup and make one pot meals.  Thanks to the Raw Riders who participated in a 24 hr Bike-a-thon for charity.

December - January 2013

Our Lady of Good Counsel's Evangelization  Committee sponsored a Linen and Pots & Pan Drive in November.  Our Linen closet is over flowing with towels and sheets and we have enough Pots and Pans to help everyone on the list.  A BIG HUG from all of our friends goes to those who donated this season.  Please remember us whenever its time to clean a closet or cupboard.

October - November 2012

We have started our Fall/Winter Schedule.  The 2nd and 4th Saturdays only at 8:00am.  Deliveries and pick ups are still on schedule for the Friday evening before the Saturday.  We have branched out and are now assisting those closer to the East Side of downtown.  It seems the business card has now traveled to new zip codes and churches who have people in need of our services. This winter we are still looking for a blanket and pillow sponsor - if your group/work can help for a holiday outreach program just contact us and I can schedule a presentation.

Bedding and Beds continues to be a priority.  We are one of the only groups still accepting mattress donations - tell all your friends and neighbors.  We will pick up depending on the location.

August - September 2012

These months are flying past and with my work schedule I am unable to get downtown on the weekends to visit with friends and add to the list.  Lucky for us they have our phone number and continue to call for assistance.  We have been asked to help in other areas of the city so we are looking to expand our aid.  The expansion means more volunteers are needed and resources.

June - July 2012

Mid June and the weather,  although very warm has cooperated with pick ups and deliveries.  The list is starting to get longer and the donations have been dropping.  I am now looking for storage facilities who would rather donate the items left behind from tenants than add them to a dumpster.  It would reduce their waste cost, it would help someone in need and not go to a landfill.  If you would like to help by making calls - let me know.

I would like to thank my newest Needles Member - She is supplying us with hand knit washcloths every other month.  Our friends love them!  I pass them out with a bar of soap and they would all like to offer their thanks and God Bless You.

April - May 2012

I thought I would use 2 months for News since 1 month flies by so fast.  April Project is to unload the large items we received over the last few months that went into storage.  It will take 2 full days and help 12 families with china to kitchen tables, beds and living room chairs.  Once emptied out we can look for new items to distribute.  If you  know an organization willing to let us post a flyer or a notice in a newsletter - we need to raise awareness to increase donations and decrease the risk of them going into a landfill.
We load trucks on late Friday afternoons and deliver on Saturdays normally but we do have one request to move during the week so if you are looking for something to do - volunteers are needed.

March 2012

Spring is on its way and we are gearing up to provide the basics in both household items as well as furniture.   4 more of our friends have secured stable housing and we will be moving them in by the end of March.
The apartments just east of Downtown have now been added to our delivery area as this is where updated housing is available to those we serve.

February in the News
We set a Record - this is the first year we were able to deliver through the winter in Michigan and God was the one who may it happen.  The perfect equation of  Donors + Dollars + Weather + Volunteers = Friends off the street and starting over.  This was a nice change to the previous few months of storage facilities not being able to offer free units - we lost 2 so we will need to find 2 more.  The storage is needed so we don't refuse donations needed and have space to sort and pack starter boxes.

Happy New Year 2012!!!
We have been truly blessed with a donation that came in before Christmas.  With these funds and our mild weather we have continued to rent a  truck on Christmas Eve, New Years Eve and again January 7th.  We are picking up pieces and delivering the next day. Thanks for all the gift from Our Lady Of Sorrows Giving Tree - without them our friends would not have gotten pots and pans, radios, can openers and sheets for Christmas.  Those who have been waiting since August wish you and your families a special blessing this holiday season and a very Blessed New Year to come.

Merry Christmas from All Those Served.
The first weekend in December were our last large delivery days and yes the snow melted before we started out.  We were able to help 6 households along the way and many others with smaller items on that Saturday Morning.  Deliveries will begin again in March unless there is a special need.  We have been blessed this year and although we have lost 2 storage units we are grateful for the 2 that still remain. We will continue to pick up donations in order to re-stock so if you can help with the list just send us an e-mail.  The winter months always increase the needs for blankets, comforters, sheets and towels which we will continue to bring to those in need.
Happy Holidays and Thanks for All the Hugs in 2011.

HUGS Needles and Yarns Club

Our team now represents several states helping with donated yarns.  If you like to knit/crochet or have yarn scraps we would be more than happy to accept the help.  Not ready to make a large time commitment to a project or have a small group in need of a project?  Wash cloths can be knit, crocheted or sewn and we deliver over 12, 000 each year. We are also looking for hats - this easy project takes only a few days and hours to do.  Need a pattern - let us know and I can provide one or search the web.
